The Humble Playlist was arrogantly conceived of as a
post-modern opera lasting over seven hours. Various pop and sub-pop songs were appropriated, whose lyrics, like so many double
entendre's, were relevant, as deconstructed, to the quite
existential, "dark night of the soul" poem, "Humbled Beyond a
Word." The course of the opera parallels that poem, and
tells a sort of nightmare in a non-linear fashion. Beyond
being art about art, and poetry about poetry, "Humbled Beyond a
Word" is very much about consciousness (in dreams and lucidity),
about the individual ego's relation to the public, and about
visionary experience; and hence many of the songs reference
dreams, the social loner, and visions, as well as the
experiential limits of language that the poem's title also
points towards. One can imagine that quite a sum of
"paranoid payola" was involved to get so many famous artists on
board for the project over a span of decades. The key to
the poem being such a linguistic black hole may be in its
fundamental symbolic structures that relate to that which is
very common to most of us: clichés beyond clichés of a universal
soul.
